School Council
- The School Council began in 1999 and has been running successfully ever since.
- Each year the children in each Key Stage 2 class vote, democratically, for two of their peers to represent their class on the School Council.
- Once elected, the class reps meet with Mrs Berry and thus the work begins.
- One of the first duties the Council members undertake is to conduct a Pupil Questionnaire with their own class. This is in line with the questionnaire that parents receive each year. We like the pupils to ‘have a voice’ in the way their school is run and indeed the surroundings in which they work. (The Pupil Questionnaire can be found at the end of this report).
- The results from the questionnaire are brought to another Council meeting and discussed and typed up, by Council members, to be handed back to reps to report to their class.
- The Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher and the Chair of Governors also receive a copy of the questionnaire results. Mrs Bee, and sometimes the Chair of Governors attend some meetings with the Council to address any issues/requests. In recent years we have addressed such issues as:
- New carpets for the classrooms
- New windows for the classrooms
- Refurbishing the toilet areas/cloakrooms
- Putting blinds up in the mobile classrooms
- Replacing water fountains
- Markings for the playgrounds
- New coat pegs
- Tuck shop foods
- The Council also runs ‘Health Weeks’ where the whole school is engaged in a week full of healthy activities.
- The Council does not always get everything it asks for, often due to lack of finances. However, the Council is listened to and their comments are taken seriously.
- The most recent achievements have been:
- Producing a Travel Plan for Five Ways, where the school won a county award for pupil involvement and attention to detail in the objectives for the plan (further details can be found at the end of this report).
- Discussing healthy school dinners with Mrs McKenzie, from County Catering Services. Two Year 6 Council reps spoke about the meeting, on behalf of the School Council, at the recent ‘Healthy Lifestyle’ evening hosted in school for parents and pupils.
